Project start and a couple questions

Hi Gents:

Well, I finally started on my project. I usually do a detailed build diary for each of my projects, but I might skip this one. I don't plan on forging any new ground.

Here's the christmas gift I bought my wife. I picked it up in AR for $750. The old man who previously owned it blew a head gasket. I think he had a horrible mechanic because the guy seemed to tear up and disassemble more stuff than was required. In the end, the mechnic told the old guy just to sell the car because it wasn't worth the trouble. He literally wept when I took her away.

This is a weird project because I usually get to make all the design/mechanical decisions. On this one, they all have to go through her first.

Sadly, many of these parts are available. If you see something you need, please let me know. I'm sure we can work something very reasonable out.

Refresh my memory... what are you going to do to this car?

Split the post?

And the demo begins... For the most part, she seems pretty solid. The sheetmetal around the brake master cylinders seems really weak and will likely be beefed up. The battery tray has some rust , and there is a hole where the battery rubber through the firewall. Other than than--knock on wood--she seems good.

Basically, round rear arches; bumperless; twenty valve Toyota engine; RX dash se7en rear end; all leather interior; early bug-eyed steelies or possibly black powdercoated wire wheels (if budget allows).

Oh, and for the question: I cannot figure out how to remove the wipers. I popped off the arms, and I have the motor disconnected, I just cannot unbolt the three wiper bits from the body. What is the trick to this? I put a 3/4" socket on it but when I twist really hard, the whole mechanism moves and I feel like I'm going to brake something.

Should I remove the cable from the individual wiper actuators?

--Thanks, Chris

They are seized. Remove the cable and tubes so you do not accidentally bend/kink them. Use some vise grips to hold the box underneath and try again. If it fails (even after penetrating oil) then use a dremel to cut the nuts off.
