The big Healeys had zinc layers between the springs to slow down rusting and probably provide some lubrication. These will eventually wear and waste away. The aftermarket springs have plastic strips. I know some people have used teflon tape (avail. at boating supply houses?) and/or lots of grease to keep the squeaking/rusting to a minimum. Not sure what the Spridgets/Bugeyes had but just thought I'd mention it.
You know what, 48 years and yep I can see some wear in the springs, in another 20 or 30 years I supose I will have to replace them. Oh wait in 20 or 30 years I will be 88 or 98 years old. Gesh. Not sure it is worth the effort but is an intresting concept.
Yea, I have some white graphite in a plastic squeese bottle thing, used it on my boat from time to time. From what I saw when takeing thse springs apart and cleaning it was the dirt that caused the wear not a lack of lub. In fact they were real good inside. Glad I kept them to rebuild they will last a long time and do in fact look new.
