Ixora went for a drive today. First time in about a month, during which I did many things to it.

Here's a brief list:

New rear hub seals
New rear brakes, cylinders, misc. related parts.
Changed all fluids including brake, trans, and axel lube
Replaced rear wire harnesses.
Replaced panhard rod bushings
Replaced transmission mounts and longitudinal rod bushings.
Shimmed shift rod spring and ball assy's to improve gear selection retention. (It worked!)
Removed interior and treated floors with POR-15 process
Fabricated and installed seat bracket tilt and elevating shims
Cleaned and lubed seat brackets (watch out, these babies slide fast!)
Installed cockpit insulation per instructions from member of this forum
Fabricated and installed scuttle reinforcement plate. (10 gauge. 40 welds. From cockpit side.)
Secured tunnel and extention with screws and sealed with aluminum tape.
Fabricted and installed muffler heat shield.
Resecured exhaust system at all three hangers. (Only one had been functional).

So...The muffler no longer drags on the driveway entrance. The scuttle shake is completely gone. Cockpit is nice and cool. The transmission stays in gear. The spicer joint no longer bangs on the rear of the trans tunnel when cornering. And the brakes work so much better without axel lube all over the shoes!

Next project:

Swap out the front wire harness, rebuild carbs, install left side air duct, replace idler rod ball joints, reshim steering box to reduce steering slop, bleed front brakes and maybe install new oil pump if I can find one. All suppliers were out a few weeks ago.

This ought to keep me busy for a couple of more weeks.

Thanks for all the advice on the work so far.

Brian, could you elaborate on this one a little more?
Do you mean the U-joints were hitting the transmission tunnel? I know the emergency brake nut seems awfully close to the the U-joint inside the tunnel, and I always feared that is an area that needs to be corrected.

That emergency brake nut is supposed to be half height. If not it will rub on tight turns. Ask me how I know? It is a terrible sound!

I'm just guessing. But there was loud noise under hard cornering. Never did figure out for sure what it was. I suspect that since the rear trans mounts were totally shot the transmission was moving laterally allowing the U-joint to hit something. Doesn't do it anymore.

But the tunnel was really banged up, like it had been hammered by a free flying drive shaft at some point. So I'm guessing a PO had a very bad day at one time.

Whoa! glad I asked. I'll change mine right away. Looks like it should be a "jam nut."
