Progress on the $40 Paint Job

tdskip said:
So check me on this idea guys - since the paint application is fairly forgiving since you are going to wet sand it all anyway, why couldn't you simply deliberatley apply a heavy set of coats and then have some one professionally wet sand it for you. Isn't that the stage which is really critical?

Tom
You've got to apply thin layers so the paint will flatten and if you do not sand between layer (every two layers) you will sand through areas when you try to level the last layer.

Today, I got some time to primer the fenders, hood and boot of the TR3 and the doors of the B/E. Rolled the self etching primer on. Hopefully, next week I can roll on the epoxy primer so I can slowly do some body work on the B/E, TR3 and MGA. One part at a time. But now the MGA is No. 1 as it must be done by Christmas.

I think someone would need at least 3 qts to paint the interior and exterior of an LBC. I'm thinking I'll spray the interiors of the cars outside and then roll the exteriors (too many bugs/dust etc).

Ah - so the sanding is at each step. Duh - sorry. Sounds like just spraying conventionally and then having that wet sanded is easier then. (For me anyway. I can get wet sanding done well and inexpensively down here)

Nice looking color.

I`m currently having my `57 TR3 painted the same or similar color. I`m using a "BMW" color, Dupont code #147/L7590 called "Safari Beige". I did one wheel at first to see if I infact would like it (Which I did) & now the rest of the car is being done. My Interior will be a "Dk Burgundy (Wine color) piped in white. What a sweet looking combo!! Whats your Int. color going to be?

Have Fun,

Russ

Wow thats some great pictures of the paint on your car parts can you tell me did you have to dissamble all of the car so you could have them spread out flat to avoid runs; i have a spitfire and alot of that body just can't be unbolted what do you think is the paint going to sag alot on the rear quarters; also do you have a site with pictures of your finished car i would love to see some. thanks rick.

No, but like any paint job, the more you can dissamble the car the better the paint edges on the panels will be.Since you are putting on thin layers at-a-time you should avoid runs and sags. If you get them you are putting on too much paint. The Mopar forum is the origin of the maddness, but it is so long that this site gives you much of the info in a condenced version. Rolled On
