I had a nice chat with Hap this afternoon, and got some more tips and instructions on how to proceed with getting my engine going. The next step for me was to get oil pressure verified.
First I had to re-route the line from the block to the gauge, as it was interfering with the distributor (specifically the vacuum advance thingy). I spent a few minutes with my trusty pipe bender and all was well. I reset the static timing and decided to give the oil pressure a try.
Hap had given me a few tips on getting going. I pulled off the fitting that goes to the oil filter, and tried to crank the motor. Nothing (no cranking at all). Ahh, I've seen this before... a minute spent with some rubber insulation and tape to keep the starter cable from grounding out, and I had a spinning motor.
Hap suggested that this method should allow me to see when the oil was starting to move from the pump. I wasn't getting anything, so I followed another suggestion of his and poured a bit of oil down that opening and rotated the engine backwards to pull it into the pump as a priming method. Once that was done, it was back on with the fitting and a bit more cranking -- and checking for major leaks (none found so far).
A quick move to where I could see the oil gauge, and in a short time (less than 1 minute) I had pressure at the gauge. Woohoo!

Afterwards I poured a small measure of The Macallan in celebration.
