Progress and a question or two about calipers

I've decided I need to do what Jack does and report progress. This will keep me moving forward every day (mostly /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif ) Tonight I took my calipers apart and they are currently soaking in solvent. As an added bonus I got to use my new air wrench for the very first time - hurray. I used the article in Classic Motorsports as a reference. (The one on the Midget restoration - caliper rebuild) Here are my questions

1. They honed the cylinders. Is this necessary? If it is, what should I use? (The cylinders look fine)

2. They painted the calipers after they were reconstructed. Does this make sense? Do you mask the cylinders?

3. What do you use to lubricate the parts as they go together? I forget what they used.

4. Grease nipples. These are standard right? I can get them at my parts store?

I'm sure I'll have more questions

TIA
JP

I'm sorry I have the subject line Progress tied up for the next six months or so. LOL

Good on ya, will look forward to it.

Grease nipple?

I just did a pair of calipers.
I powdercoated mine but paint works just as good.
Do NOT paint inside the bores or where the 2 halfs meet.
Drop in the old pistons, install the bleeder and other plug, bolt the 2 halfs together and paint them.
Once painted, open them up, remove the pistons and use a rubber grease (used to come with rebuild kits) or Vic Brit lists it. lightly coat the bores and machined flats of the 1/2s.
I hope you meant BLEEDER nipples and not GREASE nipples.
The bleeders are 3/8 x 24.
If the bores are bad, hone them. I never hone anything that doesn't need it. You can tell by looking.

AH! Bleeders.

yep, Bleeders is a Brit word, plural of Bloody. Right did I get that right?

yes bleeders - my bad

A bleeder is an objectionable person eg that bleeder took my spanner and didn't return it.

Bloody <heck> is more of a cuss word.

Ahhh, had the idea was just useing it wrong, sorry. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
