General TR Problem mounting the a type to the gear box

I hear this happens a lot. Gear box and OD are rebuilt. Tried last weekend with a former Triumph tech to mount the OD. Problem is the last spline does not want to turn and line up with the splines on the shaft. We'd get about 1/2" away and stop. We tried using screwdrivers to twist the 2 splines into alignment inside the tail shaft but it's so tight it would barley move. He took it apart over the week and tried it himself with no luck. I watched a video on line and all he did was align everything up like we did and twisted the tail shaft yoke and it popped right on.
Why won't the yoke turn on mine and what could we be doing wrong.

Is it hanging up on the pump plunger, I use string to hold it down and then cut the string and pull it out once the OD goes fully home. At 1/2 inch it seems to me the splines are matched by then and the only thing holding it from going home is the pump plunger.

We used safety wire. Doubled it up and pulled the plunger down and wrapped it around where the filter is. I'm sure it's that last set of splines. With a flash light I can look inside and see they are not lined up and like I said it won't turn with the unit fully assembled. You can see in the pic that the splines aren't lined up.

Another way to align the splines, take the cam off,no springs and do a dry run, slide the overdrive on and get the splines lined up that way, take it off, don't touch the rear flange ,now put the overdrive back on

Thanks sorry I didn't get back sooner but so busy right now. Phil the problem is we can't turn the tail shaft to match up the splines once the unit is together.

Thanks for the offer and considering it. My mechanic suggested using a spare shaft and assemble it with the shaft in place. Is that what you are thinking? My question to Jessie was why do they have to be independent of each other if they ride on the same splines. I guess I don't understand the operation of the overdrive. I got to get to bed now I'm on overload!!!

I rebuilt my tranny after I did the overdrive for just this reason...I used the loose tranny shaft to make sure all the OD splines were aligned. Won't help you at this point, though. All I can recommend is a lot of trial and err, loosening jiggling and re-snugging.

what I was saying, leave the springs off,cam lob off,use your mainshaft to align the splines in your overdrive, slip the ovedrive on till it stops and then move the tailshaft flange till it lines up,pull the overdrive off, dont touch the tailshaft flange(thats what will move the spline and then you will have to line up again)put your springs and cam lob back on and put your overdrive back on and see if you cant line er up

I'm going to give that a try this weekend without the springs Phil, in between trying to get the leaf string off the driver side.
