Post D type, pre E type LeMans ? Prototype

My brother in law lives in the Hamptons of Long Island, and has seen a car recently, on the street, that he claims is a factory prototype - Post D-type and Pre E-type car.

He is having difficulty sending me the cell phone pictures he took, but tells me it's nose is similar to an E type's.

Anyone know if such a Jaguar exists?
 
If it's white with a blue stripe and a removable hard-top, it's a reproduction of the lightweight E type race cars. They only made a handful of the original aluminum race cars. If it's the one i'm familiar with, it's a VERY good, high dollar repro.

Nope. Not an E type lightweight. Not white/blue.

A stunning British Racing Green. Shorty windscreen, and some kind of downdraft (Weber ?) carbs visible through a beautiful clear plastic cover, over a V-12 motor.

Not an XK-SS. I don't think.

Next hint: He spied the VIN plate and I think he said it showed XK? did he say XK-13?

He is still trying to send me the pics from his cell phone. However, he gets lousy reception almost everywhere, and it's not going through. I wish he'd just load them in his cursed PC and email me from there.

Here's THE XJ-13. Only ONE was made, and it belongs to Jaguar. All others are replicas.

Was it mid-engined? If so, like <span style="font-weight: bold">martx-5</span> said, it’s probably a replica XJ-13.

Which is still really cool. There aren’t many XJ-13 replica builders out there and the ones that are do really nice work.

Replicas will have some form of the ubiquitous Jag sohc V-12.

The real one had a prototype dohc engine.

Then again, if you’re really luck and have the bucks, you never know. You just might find one of those prototypes.

Looks like a Proteus brand replica. They are the best I've seen so far. Nice touch the replica plate.
 
David Hobbs drove the car to a new speed record at MIRA in the UK, a record with stood until fairly recently, in fact. Yes, the David Hobbs who does F1 commentary for Speed Channel.

He owns a Honda dealership here in Milwaukee.
 
I'm sure it is a replica - but boy, does it look super! I never knew anything about this car until just very recently. Thanks for all the info!

High art, it is. So pretty it belongs in a museum, IMHO.

Roger - I like your answer! I'm with you! This car does live very close to the old Bridgehampton Race Track.
