Positive ground

Country flag
Offline
I know this topic has been beaten to death, I just want to make sure that I've got it right. Positive ground, still hooks cables up in the same way, pos to red, neg to black. The red cable should ground onto the firewall.
Jumping from another car - pos to pos, neg to neg, ground the pos cable if not attaching to dead pos term.
Charging the battery if out of car, same as always.

Do I have this all right?

I wouldn't depend on the color of the cables in the car; red may not be positive and vice versa. Connect the black cable from jump-starting car (assuming it's negative) to the the negative terminal (even if it may be the red cable), and the red cable to the frame. Battery charger can connect to the terminals, but please check the labeling of the battery terminals and don't go by color alone. My dad has a positive ground car where the colors are backward from today's convention.

If memory serves, and I'd get confirmation, one easy way to make sure you have it correct is to double check that the positive terminal connection results in the cable quickly running to the chassis (where it grounds).

Yes, you have it right.

ALWAYS positive to positive, neg to neg. I strongly suggest always attaching the red cable to the positive pole of the battery, even if it goes to ground, and black to the negative. Red=positive, black=negative; this is a well recognized standard. If you don't observe it, someone trying to jump-start the car might easily hook up the jumper cables backwards. I have never seen the results of this, and I really don't want to. All I know is that it would be very, very bad.....

Was the battery charger case touching any metal part on the car?
