Porsche fuel tank cleaning

I just picked up an '80 model porsche 924 cheap. Its in good shape except for a dirty fuel tank. Does anyone know if there's a way to clean the inside of the tank without removing it? Sounds crazy, I know, but I hate to remove the transaxle/transmission just to remove the tank.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Joe, I'm not gonna try to list all the reasons (and PLEASE understand this is NOT out of any ill-intent), but you either need to drop the tank and have it properly cleaned, or (and this is the route I'd be inclined to recommend) sell it for 10% more than it cost you to acquire.

It'll 'Break Your Heart.'

You speak from experience wrenching on those little German cars, right Doc? Thought I remembered another thread where you expounded at length on the virtues of the 924.

Yep, Scott: "factory trained" Porsche-Audi wrench... Let's just say I'm not the biggest cheerleader for that particular model, 'k ? There's plenty of folks who like 'em, I'm just not one of 'em.

While it may seem a formidable task, it is do-able, it is
just nuts and bolts and washers afterall. If you have a
logical mind, mechanics shouldn't scare you, think of it
as a challenge...

Been there, done that, took the tank to a radiator shop
for cleaning... Is it any wonder I stick to Fords these
days... Dead nuts simple...

Opinions on a 951/944 Turbo? My brother in law has a well sorted 86 with low miles that I'm angling for. Comes with the special Porsche tool for timing belt tension measuring. Interior is perfect and so it the paint. I think it has about 85k miles on it.

FAR different car than a 924. That said, we (clandestinely...*shh!* /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif ) took a 944 Turbo out and lined up with my +2... the Lotus walked away from it in a drag race, FWIW.

You're eastern PA so I don't know what the Porsche shops are like around there, but if you're ever in the PGH area... I "know some people." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

944, it's that water pump, and timing belt replacement every 30,000 miles that kills it IMHO... Other than that, I think their pretty neat cars.

This one is bone stock except some fancy Fuchs forged wheels and a Weltmeister (sp?) chip. It has a factory LSD and a couple of desirable options. He never drives the thing. SWMBO would probably mandate the MGB gets sold as part of the deal, so I dunno...

No wonder the +2 smoked it, if it had a body that wasn't plastic, the 951 might have stood a chance. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

You going to the Import show @ Carlisle on the 19th-21st?

Ooh, oooh, a Capri fan. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I owned a 71 when I was a kid (I'm 38). It was a wimpy 1600. The oil pump let go and trashed the bottom end. My dad scored a Pinto 2.0L engine from a local junkyard despite by begging for the 2.6 V6 lump. I loved that little car. I kissed a utility pole and totaled it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

If only they had fitted an IRS, it might have been a Z-car contender. To be fair, they seemd to rust just as fast.

I live in Florida now. Not likely I'll venture "up there" in the forseeable future.

I know Perkiomen and the surrounding area kinda well, BTW.

Yea, Steve...It will just take some time and effort. Thank goodness for my nut splitter. Removing that exhaust pipe's frozen nuts would be a bitch without one! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif
