Poly Steering Rack Mounts

I have just changed out the solid (aluminum) steering rack mounts installed by the car's previous owner to poly. How tight should the nuts on the u-bolts be? The shop manual gives a torque rating, and also calls out for the rubber to be compressed to pushing out about an 1/8 inch. I'm sure the poly mounts specs are different than rubber mounts. I tightened them down to very snug with a 3/8 socket wrench, but that was just a guess. BTW, it made a great difference in eliminating most of the vibration to the steering wheel. I wish I had done it sooner.

Snug them firmly and make sure there is no movement in the rack when the wheel is turned.
Were your mating surfaces clean when you installed the new bushings? Dirt will work as an abrasive and slowly eat away at the urethane.

Thanks Doug. Probably not as clean as they could have been. I'll go back in and clean them up.
