Polarizeing Generator steps

OK,
Thanks to this forum, I will flash polarize my generator when I receive it tomorrow tonight. Beign challenged with all things electrical I wanted to check on something.

It seems that with our batteries in the trunk, I can run a wire from the "B" post on the voltage regulator and the other end gets brushed across the "F" terminal of the generator.

Can one just hold this wire in your hand, or is it a shocking experience to say the least? Will I want to make sure that the other gererator is not connected?

Thanks, Velo, who doesn't like the smell of burning flesh!

On various cars over the ages I've never had any problems polarising generators that are in the vehicle by simply disconnecting both the output and field connections, then running a wire from the side of the battery that is not chassis to the field terminal. Just touching it on briefly.

All you are doing is ensuring that the residual magnetism in the iron core of the field windings is such that when the generator starts to spin current is generated in the correct polarity to enhance the field rather than diminish it. The generator 'boot-straps' it self until there is enough voltage to pull in the isolator on the regulator, which also then powers the field from the battery.

I have installed the rebuilt generator tonight, then I ran a wire from the "B" terminal at regulator and brushed the d/f terminal (small blade) on the generator and got a small spark.

Then fired her up, and problem solved! Ignition light goes out after a few rpms and she seems content!
