TR4/4A Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Installed

Good Day Folks:

I`ve been playing with My Bendix AM Radio for quite some time now and getting Frustrated with the Installation:

When I take the Blk & Chrome knobs off & Try to put the Chrome Faceplate on; There is not enough Thread left to Secure the whole thing: The Two bosses on the Bare Metal portion of the Radio seem to butt up to the Back of the Dash Support & do not allow for the Threaded portion & dial to come all the way thru? Does this Faceplate sit on the Front or Rear of the Dash Support? It looks to me like it should be on the Front but I can`t find Pics or Anything telling Me or Showing Me what Its supposed to look like!

Anyone out there who has an Orig. Bendix AM Radio sitting in their console area; Please Advise & or Send Pics of the way Its supposed to look!

Thanx in Advance;

Russ

Sorry Russ ... saw your earlier post but couldn't help.

My TR4 has an old but aftermarket radio in it.

Good luck with your search.

Russ, I almost replied yesterday but decided against it at the time. I've had several of these radios, but only in a Herald. Both utilized the "official" accessory mount offered by Triumph in the US. I don't know how, or IF, that mount differs from that in a TR4 as to how the radio fits to it.

I'm pretty sure the face plate goes on the radio before it is fitted to the back of the dash mount. I'm wondering if there is any adjustment in the threaded posts (off/on/volume and tuner), such as a nut that can be backed down more, that might enable you to better fit the radio?

I'd offer pictures, but my digital camera and computer are in the midst of a feud worthy of Hatfields and McCoys. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif Is there any possibility that YOU could post a picture or two of your radio and mount?

Here are a few pictures of how mine's installed. It's been a long time since I put it in, but I seem to remember having the same problem. Are there tabs on each end of the faceplate? I think I cut those off. The black plate that the chrome bezel fits into I made myself. I hope this helps.

Re: Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Insta

Sorry I'm away from home so no pics & just my feeble memory, but...

The faceplate certainly goes behind the dash support. I seem to recall that there were nuts on the shafts of the controls that determined the amount of shaft available to project thru, then another set of nuts that secured everything to the dash support (with the chrome bit sort of sandwiched in there.

Re: Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Insta

Well; I would like to "Thank You" folks for the Info:

TR_Jim; Special Thanx for taking the Whole Radio apart for Me (I hope you did`nt do it just cause of Me)? I do have tabs on both ends of the Chrome Faceplate: I`m not too keen on cutting them off but Whatever It`ll take?

GeoHahn; Thanx for Your reply as well: Obviously I need to take the Radio back out & Try this whole Process with that Face Plate on the Back Side of Support:

Sounds like a Plan for this Weekend; Will advise How Successful I`ll be??

Regards, Russ

I'm not positive, Russ, but I think the "package" on eBay is from a mid-1960s Triumph 2000 sedan. The radio, though, would be virtually identical to yours.

Re: Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Insta

Hi Andrew;

I suspect your right: Where would that Speaker go anyway in the TR4? It sure does look nice! The Radio pictured is "Exactly" the same as Mine to Include that Elusive Chrome Face Plate: It sure would be Nice If I could somehow get the Chrome Face Plate on the "Front" of the Dash Support as It really makes the Whole thing look nice with the Chrome and All: Well; We`ll see this Weekend:

Thanx for the Input & All the Assistance Gents;

Regards, Russ

PS: Hey TR-Jim or All out there: The "Threaded Portion" on the Turn Dials; Are they Integral or can they be Adjusted inward or outward? My Problem are those "Boss`s" directly behind the Threads, they butt up to the Rear of the Dash Support, Preventing the Radio to Pass thru Its Opening and Leaving No Thrds to Secure It! I was thinking about Grinding Off some mat`l (1/8" or so)back! What do you folks think? I`m not certain if those "Boss`s" are Solid or Very Thin Walled?

Re: Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Insta

Russ, I would doubt that the "bosses" are solid. The threaded portion on my radio are not adjustable.

The reason I ended up installing mine the way I did is because the center support was cut out oversized for a modern radio. So I made a blanking plate and cut it out for the chrome faceplate. This left me with even more thickness to put the radio through, so I cut the tabs off of the faceplate so it could be mounted independent of the radio.

Re: Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Insta

Hi TR_Jim;

After thinking about it for a Few Seconds! The Boss`s can`t be solid simply due to the Shafts going in there: I have`nt taken the Radio apart to see whats inside cause Frankly It plays just fine & I`m afraid I`ll screw something up:

This Weekend I`m going to take it out & put the Chrome Faceplate directly onto the Radio & Place the Whole thing into the Back of the Dash Support and See what happens??

I`ll let you folks know how things turn out;

Thanx Again;

Russ

Re: Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Insta

Good Morning Folks: Sunny & will be "80deg" today:

The TR will be out and about yet another Glorious Day in the Northeast!

Never got a chance to Play with the Radio this Weekend: I was out Cruising around the Back Roads of the Poconos with a Couple of `67 Alfa-Romeo Duetto friends of Mine:

Today; I will be seeing my Brit Guru Mechanic: He has All the Necessary tools to perhaps help me with the Radio: "Sludge Hammers" / "Chain Saws" etc etc:

Have a Splendid Day;

Regards, Russ

Re: Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Insta

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif Well Folks; I did it! I Think??

I cut off the ears on the Chrome Plate Surround and "Crazy Glued" the Chrome Surround around the Dial: I guess I could have Centered it better but Its OK for Myself: Now; The Radio is Secure and Removable, If necessary / No Cutting into the Dash Support etc:

What do You Folks think?

I just got 3rd. Place @ "Britfest" (Bashed in Door and All):

Regards, Russ

Re: Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Insta

Thanx Jim;

I`m just going to do one more thing: I have some Really Great Black Die: Get a fine, Detail Paint Brush and just touch up what the Chrome Faceplate did`nt cover & Its Good to Go!

Seems to even get a few more channels now (Whenever I`m near a Big City That Is)!

Regards, Russ

Re: Please Help! Send Pics of TR4 A-AM Radio Insta

Hi There All;

Well; I`ve been to a couple of shows lately and have seen the way this "Bendix AM Radio" is supposed to be installed:

The Chrome "Ears" are supposed to be on the Outside of the Dash Support; Visible to the eye and just behind the Knobs:

How they get it in this position is beyond me but that`s the way It was!

Well; Close enough for Me anyway;

Regards, Russ
