Please explain this to me

Nope. You're wrong. Google it. The ship in question is still owned by someone, it and the cargo are not abandoned.

The point is moot anyway; the salvage operation was done under a contract awarded by the owner of the ship so the rights and ownership of the salvage isn't in question.

Even if the salvage company decided to do the job on their own they would end up in court over it - the same company already did that when they salvaged an 1800s Spanish shipwreck worth an estimated $500,000,000. In that case Spain claimed ownership of the wreck and cargo because the ship was part of the Spanish Navy.

Guess it all depends on who has a valid claim of ownership... Speaking of shipwrecks, check this out:

I know I'm nit-picky but their use of nautical terms and their pronunciation is sloppy. Forecastle is pronounced 'fouc-sal'.

I enjoyed that, thanks

This is just fascinating to me, can't seem to find any recent news...

Same here. There was a local news show that did a good segment on Gregg Brooks, but I can't seem to find that either.

Yes, from what I read it all depends on how fabulous you are as whether or not you are allowed to own what was yours.

Bottom line, if they want it they take it if you can't do anything about it. At least that's what I read.

perhaps they should take a trip to France...around 1789.
