I needed to fill the differential on my TR6 so today I raised the rear end (front two wheels on the ground) and to be safe I placed two jack stands at the rear. I checked the car to make sure its good and stable before getting under it, then I get on my creeper and put a wrench on the drain plug. I pull down to loosen the plug and to my horror the car starts to roll forward almost coming off of the rear jack stands. I immediately dropped my wrench in anticipation of trying to escape a car about to fall.... Thank goodness the car stopped rolling forward when I dropped the wrench.
Please do not do what I did.... MAKE SURE YOU SET THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND CHOCK THE FRONT WHEELS!!!
Please be safe!!

Elliot - a pair of these will be dropping in your front yard soon ...

Glad you're ok!

Thanks Tom. It scared the bejeezus out of me. It won't happen again!

Wow, glad you're ok!! When I was first married and living in base housing with my new wife at Malmstrom AFB in Montana, a sergeant who lived across the street from us was killed exactly that way!

It's the small things that get you. I just never even gave a thought to the fact that the car might roll forward... how dumb!

Elliot - don't feel *too* bad. A few of us have been working on our cars for years, and they *still* won't roll forward.

:jester:

I should have had a robot in my garage....

One of the reasons that I take the time to put stands under the car,& push & pull on it,to make sure it's secure - not to say I haven't done otherstupid things over the years.... - Doug

I guess you're right about the emergency brake.
As far as the helmet goes I think it would be of no help.

Not only forward but backward too as you jack it up. I just raised the back of my Spitfire the other day and blocked the front of the front wheels. As I jacked the front wheels moved easier then the wheels on the jack. After I put the jack stands under the car I noticed the blocks were three inches in front of the wheels.

Just a reminder that we all need to be diligent when working on our cars.
