FOGS-

Who can media blast two alloy brake drums for me? (they are the 240z type).

They need cleaned up before I polish them (the PO painted them).

I cannot find a shop in Pgh that can do the media blasting and I do not have a cabinet of my own.

Also, I live in the city so traveling to Indiana (Pa), Washington or Butler really isn't of interest. I'd like to keep it within 10 miles (or so) of dahntahn.

thanks- wes

There was a media blast shop (don't recall the name) on Neville Island. I believe the owner may have driven a GT6. But, not being a FOG, I may not be qualified to answer this question.

What does FOG mean?

FOG is secret (actually not so secret) society of old guys who must be over 50, own a Triumph and be able to pay for the shirt! I think we are up to about 36 members with regional concentration in and around Pittsburgh, IL, TX, IA but also have international members as well. Let your imagination lead you to what FOG stands for!

I'd contact FOG 1 who can put you in touch with FOG 2 who has a blast cabinet. Don't know the media however.

Jerry-

Great meeting you at the Mitty (even if it was brief!) - I have it on very good authority that the count is now at least 37..

I'd think glass bead wouldn't be too bad for the drums, I did my manifold before the trip and it turned out pretty good. Walnut shells might be better if you are concerned about too much abrasion - both can be had at Harbor Freight for a decent price.

I have a blast cabinet, but it has Black Beauty in it. Plus it's in Butler County.

Thanks Jerry! Hmm, I guess I do qualify as a FOG.

Is there a society for those of us under 50? Or are we just collectively known as "wannabes".

You can always start your own secret society.
Doug talk to FOG 1.
Randy, yes it was nice to meet you as well. Wonder why we didn't have more time to spend. It seemed like time passed very quickly. The drive really beat me up and we didn't do the distance that the TX FOG's did.

If the FOGs are over 50, would the under 50 owners be the NSFOGs???

On aluminum you should be using walnut shells or something similar. If all else fails, use some wire abrasive wheels in a drill.

you can google media blasting and there should be a table that tells you what media to use on aluminum. I think a steel wire wheel will leave deep scratches, I would use a brass wheel if thats the route you go, I soda blasted my trailing arms and they came out nice and I clear coated them with a 2 part urethane, and after 3 years they still look great

thanks to everyone - I hope to get something effected on these drums soon. I might just plunk down the cash and get my own home set-up.

then on the other hand, found a nice "project" '66 Triumph 250 Cub dirtbike over in OH that I might go pick up...wife's gonna kill me.

As far as the under 50 crowd (which I do qualify as well) - although not as imaginative as "FOG"...I thought that "NUG" might work. NUG stands for "Nu-Guy" - we used to use that name at my old job to indoctrinate new hires for their first year or so.

I thought I was pretty up to date on my urban slang, but apparently not. Regardless, I'll stick with "NUG" - especially as I don't "partake," as it were.
