Another one of the "Greatest Generation" lost... sad to hear the news.
 
A few interesting facts: Bill Millin was 21 when this happened, the actor playing him is considerably older than that. He was also wearing a kilt......

The actor playing the Airborne officer, Major John Howard, in that movie is Richard Todd, who actually took part in that action as an Airborne officer at Pegasus Bridge on D-Day.

The first allied soldier to die in action on D-Day was an officer in that British Airborne unit, Lt. Den Brotheridge, was from my own neck of the woods.

If you haven't read it, Stephen Ambrose's "Pegasus Bridge" is an outstanding account of that event and the weeks leading up to it. Highly recommended!
 
A truly brave act. But, Mr. Millin would not be the first Scotsman to die while playing the pipes in battle. It is a very, very old tradition, many centuries, probably thousands of years old. Roman legions encountered "barbarians" playing pipes in battle in what is now the British Isles.

What a stirring and brave thing to do!

RIP, Mr. Millin.
