Pimpin yer ride.

Okay, okay...I realize I started a small maelstrom here by threatening to "customize" my new TR4. It was never my intention to do that...well not entirely. Honestly, in the back of my mind I suspected that someone, or ones, would get their feathers ruffled and squawk. What the heck, that's half the fun of being in an online forum. This ain't my first rodeo, so I was sort of prepared.

The whole thing got me thinking. Thinking about mans eternal quest to mark his territory. To define his possessions by making them uniquely his. To leave his mark. To outline his boundaries.
This imprinted genetic carry over from when we lived in caves and wore reindeer hides, is as primal as mans need to create fire, procreate and hunt. Not necessarily in that order.

To what end is this instinctual drive satisfied...by buying his wife implants, building a backyard kitchen, turning his garage into a rumpus room or home theatre, painting the family home in his old school colors...maybe, but the one prized and adored possession that truly has the uncanny ability to define a mans need for individuality and creativity in a world of carbon copies...is his car, his ride, his topless trip back to the halcyon days of his youth when he stood tall...like a rock...and had hair...on his head.

You see brothers, for a man NOT to customize his car, at least in some small way, is an aberration, a freak of nature...a cry for help.

No, pimpin yer ride is not a crime, nor is it blasphemy, no; it's merely another one of the many rights of passage into manhood we all endure. It's nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. No, quite the contrary, for it still remains one of the few things on this God forsaken rock we can call our own, climb up to the highest parking lot and scream...I AM MAN...HEAR ME (and my custom dual chrome tipped with yellow interior exhaust) ROAR!

Now go do your taxes.

Whatever it is: cars, tractors(in my case), garage mahals, gaming PCs. audio/video, etc.. there is a forum. And on these forums are people like you and me that have a long lists of mods we dream about and ones that we actually get done and are proud of. Keep on pimpin'. Life is too short to sit back and watch it go by.

Nice car btw.

Allow me to apologise for my remarks concerning the modifications you outlined in your first posting. I did not mean to imply that you were about to desecrate one of the holy grails of motordom without a second thought but, as I often do, were about to get the horsepower before carts ability to handle it. I often get both feet in my mouth without first taking a deep breath and thinking.
Again, I meant no disrespect.

Hey, if it was a Bugatti, I would righteously jump all over your arse if you wanted to put a Chevy crate motor in it. But it's not (sadly).

I didn't read the posts you refer to that way. I just went back and only read one that was critical about making the changes. I would expect that opinion here. Can't see how these forums can be helpful if we just spit back what we want to hear.

But I did see, and it was also my opinion and still is, that the 200 hp was not even close to realistic for a reliable engine.

Anyway, I do what I want with my car and you should do the same.

Frankly, for a newbie to the forum I think your posts are highly entertaining and this last one is downright poetic. Keep em coming. But if you want to get into modifying TR4s, I'm happy to trade you mine, straight up! I'll take yours to the next VTR show where I bet I would come away with a trophy.

Tabcon, there are those among us who believe . . .

. . . that we are only <span style="font-style: italic">temporary</span> stewards of our Triumphs: we're simply holding them for the next owner/steward (and there <span style="text-decoration: underline">will</span> be a "next" owner for your car).

As such, we should endeavor to keep any mods reversible and retain all the original parts in order to pass on to the next "steward" a nice, representative example of the marque. This, in fact, is how the marque will survive and how our hobby may be perpetuated.

I firmly believe this, but of course we all pay good money for these cars (some of us <span style="font-style: italic">way too much</span> :crazyeyes:) and may do whatever we please with them. Sadly, this sometimes includes butchering and debauchery of these rare and beautiful machines, at least from a purist's standpoint.

Having said all that, all of the above is what makes this hobby so great. And this website is a tried and proven haven for all of us, modders and purists, thanks to Basil's wisdom (thank you, Bas :thumbsup:smile:.

So all I can say is, <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="text-decoration: underline">please</span></span>, before you make irreversible changes to your beautiful Triumph (TR-4s are truly rare), consider it very carefully. Also know that in so doing your car will be harder to sell when the day comes, <span style="text-decoration: underline">and</span> radical mods must inevitably decrease the value of your car.

Okay, I'm going back to my hole now. Food for thought, I hope. :yesnod:

Fella's, no offense taken. Not from anyone, no not at all. Frankly, I deserved a good old-fashioned forum spanking. I really should have hung out a while before dropping the modification post on everyone. As I look back, I can clearly see that I was just caught up in the moment, like a deer in the PL 700 headlights.

I hate to admit it, but this will be the second TR4 I've bought in the last 2 weeks. More on that later.

Please no need for any apologies, although I humbly accept any offered.

I'm really looking forward to taking delivery of "our" next TR4. Perhaps some my fellow stewards here can kick in when it comes time for new tires, brakes, top, etc.

Episcopal minister...hmmm. Maybe I missed my calling.

The only time I was offended was when some builder on TV announced he would be rodding a Packard of which four were ever built. I think it was one of two that were known to exist.
There are enough original Triumphs left that people shouldn't have a tizzy over others modifying their cars. Heck, with the availability of parts, the next owner,should he choose, could always take it back.

Whew........let's see.....I've got the carb parts stashed away to reverse the TBI Conversion. The distributor, however, can't be reversed. Extra days in Purgatory for that I guess. The stock 4 speed, stock diff, stock drive shaft and stock axles are all in storage after the 5 speed, Nissan diff and CVJ conversion. All are reversible. Sorry but the Lucas wire harness is toast (pun intended) and Dan Master's harness is there in it's place. Wizard Radiator, Fan Eliminator kit and Spal fan.....sorry but original parts have been sold. One foot out of Purgatory and heading further south. I'm not even going into the "harder to sell" and "value decrease" discussion. That's a discussion I leave to the "purists". In the meantime I'll be :driving:
