Picklex20 and por15 don't mix

FYI

On my project I've been using Picklex20 to convert rust and protect bare metal before paint. I believe it’s a phosphoric acid type converter that also seals and stops further oxidation process.

I had intended to use POR15 over the picklex 20, but started to think that since POR15 likes flash rust to stick well a metal conditioner (picklex20) that stops flash rust might cause me problems.

I sent an e-mail to POR and here's the response.

"Hello Steve. I have discussed this matter with my manager and we have come to the conclusion that we would not recommend using POR-15 over this coating. If you wanted to experiment and see how it came out you could, but we can not recommend it".

Steve
I have used the Pilex 20 on some areas of my '67 Roadster restoration like underneath the car, under side of floorboards and in a few other situations that I did not want to use the necessary water bath wash off of the POR Metal Ready prep, for obvious reasons. POR 15 does like light rust best but the Pilex20 is also a metal prep which you can leave unpainted for extended periods of time. So far I see no problems with the areas I applied the POR15 over the Pilex20. Some of the Por has been on more than a year and I have even gone under and chipped away at it to see if it would fall off as I was not sure about using it either. So far it seems to hold up just fine / The only thing I would suggest is to make certain the Pilex dries at least overnight. In addition the areas I have used the combo on were taken down to bare metal and were not rusty. I like to use the Pilex around seam areas as it tends to creep up into areas like that. Pilex does also warn about not to apply Self Etch primer over it but I am thinking the Por 15 will be ok.
Pilex definatly cuts out the step of having to wash it off which makes life alot easier.
I am getting ready to do some undercoat before installing the rear end. I will go take another good look around and let you know if anything seems fishy.
Hope this helps.
Mike
