Petronix Ignitor ???

Just received my order for the Petronix Ignitor Electronic Ignition and wanted a second opinion --- it just seems small. (P/N: LU-142A)

The box is the size of a "beer coaster" or a bit smaller than a CD. I was expecting a huge box w/ a distributor and many other items.

Since I am unfamilar with these items and will be getting help from a friend in the install process -- I jsut wanted to see I maybe I didn't order everything I needed or was possibly shipped the wrong item

PS -- it's negative ground (I'm in process of switching over).

Am I crazy ????

Hi George,
I can't answer the last question, but I don't think so.
The Pertronix consists of a small module in place of the points & condenser, & a rotor to slip over the distributor cam. It's all inside of the distributor which most folks consider to be an advantage. The LU-142A indicates that it is for a negative ground car. Just make sure that you follow the instructions & don't get any wires crossed. If you don't have instructions, let us know. You only get one chance to hook it up correctly. Otherwise it smokes.

I think I might switch to negative ground with the points & condenser still in & make sure everything works, before putting the Pertronix in. Saves trying to solve multiple problems all at once.

There is not much to the petronix kit . just the peices that replace the points. Like was said make sure that you have the battery at neg ground, and just attach the wires as instructed. IIf I rember right the red lead goes to the + coil and the black goes to the -- .coil ( check instructions MY mind dose not always function well LOL )

I had mine in for the last part of summer when mine was still on the road. Works great no more points to adjust. Just set the timing and go..

Just keep your old points and condenser in the tool box.
I smoked 2 petronix units so far. About 11 months on each.
I went back to the more predictable ignition. Points!
At least you stand a chance when they quite.
 
Just make sure that your ignition coil has about 2.7 to 3 ohms resistance. Less will cook the Pertronix. Also don't leave the ignition switch on for long periods with the engine not running.

George, one bit of sage advice from Dave is to retain the points after changing the polarity just to make sure everything is still working. When you are satisfied that all is up to snuff, then install the electonics.

I installed an ignitor in my mgb 3 years ago, still going strong. I drive my car everyday, so it gets a workout.
