I recently learned Peter Cahill has passed away. I first met him when we were on vacation in England and he offered to meet us where we were staying in Ludlow. I didn't realize at the time that this meant a round trip of a couple hundred miles for him. His motivation was simply to meet a fellow car nut and share a pint or two. He also arranged “behind-the-scenes” tours for us at a couple of car museums with staff members he knew. In later years we spoke by phone and corresponded by e-mail frequently. Some of our discussions made it into his columns over the years which was always a thrill for me.
He knew many of the big names in the British car scene and told dozens of fascinating stories about them. His knowledge of automotive history and his experiences were so widespread that I could not begin to do justice writing about them.
But I remember him most as simply a wonderful person with a great enthusiasm for life.
He'll be missed.
