My son borrowed my bicycle last week to get him to college as his own had a puncture. Cut a long story short he left it locked up at the railway station and it got nicked. The bike was parked right under the CCTV camera so there is a small chance the police may be able to ID the thief. It could have been worse. My sons bike is a lot more expensive than mine and I get to get a new one with the insurance money and it gives me the opportunity to upgrade a little.

It makes me wonder how many of the bikes on ebay and the like are stolen. And I can't believe that there is a big enough market out there for the amount of stolen bikes. I know if I had the slightest suspician a bike was stolen I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

I've heard that the so-called "market" for stolen bikes is HUGE (including on Craigslist).

Several years ago, my sons brand new $600.00 bike was swiped first day of class, freshman yr.
Right at his dorm. Cut the chain and off they went.
He "borrowed" my 20 year old mountain bike after that & it made it all the way thru to graduation......without a lock.

I have a 25 year old "Specialized" Hard Rock mountain bike. It has no suspension, but was a high end bike of it's day. The gear shifters are excellent, and it is rock solid. The best part is, since it was built in the early 90s. it is painted "Magenta" and white (According to the owners manual) sure. whatever you say...... It's pink and white.
I can leave it unlocked anywhere and no one will touch it. I was going to repaint it, but then thought better of it. I think it will stay that way as long as I own it. It's a great bike.

Off the main, but still on subject, some what:
i remember my Dad had an old freezer he put on the curb, with a sign that said "FREE, works"

sat out there a week.... Then he changed the sign to say "$50.00, works"; It was gone by the next morning.
that's marketing for you.

Works every time! I worked for a small company that got rid of a small trailer the same way.

Had two cheezy Asian bikes stolen out of an apartment storage room after having shipped 'em home from Thailand. Never seen again. We keep the ~old~ valued ones inside the garage; Raleigh Super Course-II, a Puch and Herself's Schwinn World Voyageur. I'd hate to lose one of those.
