Pertronix - Positive Ground

TR4

I helped a freind install a Positive Ground Pertronix Ignition with the Pertronix Coil in his 62 TR4 and the car ran great for 1 day. He said it died along the road and he had to tow it home. Any tests recommended to see if the unit itself is the problem? He is calling Pertronix too but I thought I could ask this group for input.

Is there spark at the plugs. The wires to the Petronix might be pinched and shorted. Go back and installed the points.

Check and see if the decal on the unit (under the distributor cap) is crinkled and report back.

If it is I have the cause of the failure for you.

The decal on the unit under the cap is burnt. We got the Pertronix Customer Service on the phone and they said their coil was sending too much current to the unit so it likely fried it. They told us to return everything and they would send him out replacements.

Good to hear that their customer service is being responsive. Make sure you use a 3 OHM coil with this - do that and I bet you'll have a very long and trouble free service life.

I only started digging into this after nearly frying my Pertronix unit by using the wrong coil.
