So yesterday my daughter turned 16 and first thing this morning, my wife took her to the DMV to take her permit test. She passed and Jeani took her for a test run in a local mall parking lot. Not sure how much it is by you, but we were both floored to find out it was $102 to take the test. I took mine many moons ago by sheese that's a lot.

Any parents out there recently have to go through this? Where are you and what did it cost. NY really hits us up wherever they can.

I guess that's about right for New York. With my two children, their mother covered those fees; all I had to do (as a former driving instructor) was handle all the training and practice, and take them for their road tests (given how my ex- drives, this was a very good thing)!

$5 in Alabama!

In WA St. $20. First drive for my daughter in an elementary school parking lot,put the car into a chain link fence. Did $1200 damage.
That was 1 1/2 years ago. Hopefully she got it out early.

In crazy N.M., they want to know if your child really lives at the address on his application.
They wanted a water or utility bill with "his" name on it... go figure.
They would not take a letter from his school. goofy state.
We had to go to the DMV 4 times ( Long lines and long wait time) to satisfy their request.
I think I would have paid the $100 if that was a choice other than mess with them.

I hope your Daughter paid the $102.That does seem excessive.
I always feel that the kids should pay the expenses to get their
license. That way, they might understand what some things cost.
I hope that you didn't go out & buy her a new Honda to drive.

Yeah we paid the $102. She's a young junior so a bunch of her friends are already going through this. To take that away from her now would be cruel. Just waiting to see what the insurance company tells us when they find out she will be able to drive.

I'm giving her the BMW. I did not pay much for it and spruced it up knowing I'd give it to her. It's a heavy, safe car with safty features.

Insurance for my daughter on my 02 Astro is $1400/year.
Ouch

Ouch.
Do you have a good student discount there, that might help a little.

Also in the Seattle area-
My stepdaughter just got her license and it is just over $800 per year for her and that is if she is a part-time driver with no car of her own to drive!

Painful. Most insurers will rate the teen driver on the most expensive/newest car on the policy. Standard procedure, chiefly because the probability exists that the teen (or highest risk driver) MAY drive that expensive car.

Give her a bicycle??? :cryin:

We got to pick which car. I did not have to have full coverage. The new driver could drive anything in the fleet and the car would be covered as insured.

We also did not have to start paying for him until he got his license. I think someone said they had to pay increased rates while the new driver had their learners permit.
