TR6 Pegged out hot while cold

My TR6 is pegging out hot right after starting. It is not over heating. It has a new 160° thermostat. Someone suggested that there is a air bubble in the cooling system. This I have never heard of. Any ideas?

You might try replacing the temperature sending unit. It screws into the water pump housing and has a single wire coming off of it.

If the problem isn't with the temp gauge or sender, it could very well be air trapped in the cooling system, especially if the coolant has been drained and replaced. There are several ways to go the air out. I prefer to remove the thermostat and fill the opening in the head with coolant.

So if you have a new thermostat that means you most likely put air bubble in to the system with the new thermostat. Do the math Water boils at 212 at sea level, a 9# to 12# rad. cap will make it go up to say 220 Deg. your head temp could be as high as 400 deg so air could match that temp with out water on the sender ( top of system ) do this; remove rad cap fill to top and add fluid to overflow res. so drain tube is in fluid. Start motor at idle until you see steam from rad you should not water movement until thermostat opens. At this point rad fluid should go down removing most air. Replace cap run up motor for a time say 10 min. shut down and let cool to cold check rad level again if more fluid is needed then air is gone. and system should be back to normal.
 
I drilled a very small hole in the in the thermostat plate (?). No problems with temperature here in Arizona. Also, some years ago the Spitfire gauge presented the same way, the needle was all the way to hot. Apparently one of the wires was going to ground. A little tape and it was cured for the trip. When I got home I did a proper repair.
