A couple weeks ago I got an email reminding me that my Aeroplan (like airmiles) points were expiring on the 15th of July. Assuming 14000 points were good enough to buy a cocktail peanut I didn't pay much attention. Took a quick peek today and it turns out I could get a $100 Amazon gift card with it - glad I caught it in time and never assume.
 
Similar surprise for me last year with Harbor Freight. I don't buy much there, but because I had bought something I was included in some sort of class-action lawsuit. The settlement involved millions of dollars (all around something like false advertising or billing/charges), but I figured I'd get maybe $5 (given what I've spent). I nearly tossed out the card they mailed. I filled it in and mailed if off and soon received a gift card. I took it to HF and found it had $175 on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess most people tossed the card such that those that filled it out received larger shares.
