Actually, a somewhat rougher surface, as long as it is flat, will hold a gasket better. A little "tooth" on the surfaces will help prevent the gasket from moving laterally. More grip.

Is this from personal experience or has it been documented? Just curious, since I'd imagine a smoother surface could seal better, especially since the 1500s have the machined lip for the reinforced rings around the combustion chambers on the head gasket. It doesn't seem to likely they'd move around, especially torqued to spec.
