A TR6 for Dummies question:

After three years, my car is finally more or less operational
and with luck will it might turn 2000 miles driven without a
major breakdown- later this month.

(I confess I had to replaced the ignition system several
times during the 1700 miles driven to date.)

Everything on the car except the long block is brand new or
professionally rebuilt by experts in their fields.

My question is varied:

When I hit 2,000 miles driven; what components do I pull
to have professionally rebuilt; what parts/components do I
remove and replace with new? What parts/components do I need to simply adjust?

My car has never even been close to 2,000 miles driven and
it's kinda exciting. I am really tempted to replace the
ignition parts to make sure I hit the 2000 mile mark.

PS; My present project is routine maintenance activities on
the new front suspension system.

I'm also checking a spare parts transporation device for my trunk.
It might prove helpful during major breakdowns more than 5 miles from home.

Dale, it's all in the Owners Handbook and probably somewhere in most Workshop Manuals. Plugs, points, filters and fluids have a regular schedule for replacement. Specifically, you really shouldn't even have to replace plugs and points for at least 12,000 miles...and I've had caps, rotors and condensors that I've never replaced. Beyond that, most everything else on the car -- aside from obvious wear items such as wipers and brake linings -- can go anywhere from 0-100,000 miles or more with proper maintenance. The secret when the cars were new is the same as now: in general, maintain the car properly and religiously, and use the best available replacement parts.

Yes, some items such as tie rod ends, ball joints, u-joints and the like might well need replacement in more like 25,000-50,000 miles. But Dale, please trust me when I say that once everything on Amos is properly fitted and adjusted...and then maintained as needed, you're going to look back in a few years -- with another 25,000 on that odometer, and LAUGH at your fears of every "2,000 miles a rebuild"!

Sorry Nick- I've got a new switch and all but
DPO Pedro had removed the washer bottle and motor
for some reason. So I don't need need new fluid in a bottle I don't have.

My old buddy Shadrach died last month and we now have this crazy,
ball of constant energy roaring around the house- Mishach. He
spent five weeks learning all of Shadrach's tricks to torment us.

No shipwrights setting in - just anticipating the rash of breakdowns
my TR6 is infamous for producing.

Let me get out of this heavy season in my busines, and I'll help you fix your differential,maybe 2 more weeks!!! in the meantime enjoy the good weather here!!
 
Can we get Dr. Phil down there for some one-on-one counseling. The only thing needed to replace at 2000 miles is the air in the tires, and the mindset of the owner....

Rotate the air in the tires :lol: , rotate the tires and oil, filter and lube..... remember the 60's? and 70's. That's all we ever did. And all we still need to do. Now....every winter I do pick an upgrade to do to, hopefully, make my car more reliable. What I don't do is go back 2000 miles later and re-do the upgrade that I did the year before. Twelve years, tens of thousands of miles and one tow truck ride........and that wasn't the car's fault. Just DRIVE the car.
 
i drift my tr6 and seem to have less problems then you do. you clearly are doing it wrong. i have a question... are you replacing stuff with reproduction oem components, or are you upgrading along the way? I'm going to let you in on a little secret... the stock parts are all fairly weak and crappy. BUT the reproduction stock parts are even WORSE. either upgrade along the way with high quality aftermarket stuff, or refurbish your old stock parts. dont buy the cheap(ly made but insanely expensive) oem replacement crap, cuz its crap and will break. if you just replace the pesky drivetrain with a japanese unit, then you will cease having problems. ps. the big three will rip you off.
 
Actually, Jussie, after replacing the clutch components,
repairing the tranny, installing a new drive shaft,
installing all new U-joints, and new oil seals on the diffy
and new oil seals on the tranny, rebuilding the rear axels
and installing a 100% new rear suspension- my drive trane
has been trouble free other than a rear wheel falling off
from Helicoils some PDO installed.

I have a "klunking" diffy that Gardener and I will replace
after Christmas. The only major problem I foresee just now
is the thrust washers might fall out and blow up my engine.
Nothing I can do about THAT!! Oh yeah, my No1 pushrod and
rocker arm gets no oil.

And don't forget, a lot of my car was held together with
duct tape, chewing gum and Lowes metric fasteners. The
oil had not been changed in three years of driving.

BUT........improvements have been made.

replace your thrust washers. i have like 3 or 4 sets. its not a hard job. fix your diff, get a reinforcing plate made for the top of the pins to locate them to the frame. any wiring problems? if not, your pretty much set. the car isnt that unreliable when you upgrade it with quality stuff... the problem is that upgrade parts are simply rape, and even factory replacement parts are unreasonably expensive. the car also requires a bit of ghetto-engineering on the owners part. if you cant think on your feet, and improve on factory designs yourself then you are in the wrong hobby.

[color:#660000]Jussie- I pulled the diffy and reinforced the passenger front pin. Almost nothing on my car electrical worked when my wife bought it. I gutted every wire and bulb
and electical component replaced everything with a Dan Masters PowerBlock system and 100% new TRF lamp bulbs, new GM alternator, rebuilt dash gauses, rebuilt dizzy, etc. I flew Mike Masters down from georgia for a week to help finish the wiring.

I've cut NO corners on this this car. I buy the highest quality available to me.
I am a field architect by trade so YES, I think well on my my feet- spur of the moment.

My car was a "parts car" when my wife bought it but we ignorant to that fact.

Sorry, but I have to say this. I don't know what's (who's) worse. Someone who's incredibly gun-shy after struggling to bring back to life a well-worn and badly maintained car that was severely misrepresented to him...or someone who apparently feels that these cars were junk in the beginning and are useless unless one essentially takes a Toyota Supra and glues a TR6 badge to the front. Geesh! No offense intended to anyone, but....
