Parts Car Tear Down

Someone help me here.

I have two Midgets, a 1976 and a 1978. The 1976 is the better car and I am presently getting it road worthy. The 1978 is mostly complete but seriously rusted. The bonnet, boot and doors are fine but virtually every other panel has rust through. I know what I should do, but for some reason, I feel some guilt at the thought of "killing" the car.

If this were a vintage MG-T, I would never consider ripping it apart and sending the rusty panels to the scrap yard. But it's not anything that rare and it would be so nice to remove this rusty eye sore from my driveway and fill my garage with all those wonderful spare parts.

It even has the air pump and factory installed radio. But, those parts could be used in a decent car. A restoration would require virtually rebuilding the entire body. There are rust holes in both front fenders, the floor is wasted of course, the rear fenders have rusted through holes, and the rocker panels are non-existent.

I want the parts in that car. I want to have an extra motor, tranny, rear end, etc in my garage. I feel kinda silly even hesitating here cause it's just a car, right. Please tell me I'm doing the right thing.

I think that sometimes we have to let go of things when they have reached the end of their useful life. Don't think of it as burying a dead car but think of it as providing the useful parts with a new avenue for them to provide pleasure for someone. The 78 did all it could do for its owner and if the tub is that gone you probably should let it go. As far as the parts from it they can be used to resurrect another LBC that is farther from the grave and more economical to restore. Just my $.02 and that's about all it is worth.

Thanks for the replies. I needed to hear someone else say it.

I started pulling a few parts off. Taking it apart with no intention of ever re-assembling it. Throwing the parts in a pile without even labeling anything.

Thanks for the little push. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
