This is a house and they want a pretty penny
I guess everything is relative. If you need it done quickly then you're going to end up paying for it (since a fire is out of the question). I've been told around here it's usually $30-$35 per 30-pound load (a 2500-sheet box of typical copier paper weighs about 20 pounds).
If their estimate is really out of sight then look at a moderate quality personal/office shredder. You're still going to spend money, but unless you figure out how to get a fire going legally then you're stuck with it. There are a few <$200 shredders that do a decent job without jamming or overheating every time you use it.
This
Fellows 79Ci is designed for a 10-minute run time and will handle staples/paperclips (and more). I've done this before with lots of paper and after 10 minutes there's a lot to throw away. The
99ci is a little more but it's designed to run for 25 minutes at a time and has a bigger basket.
The cheaper small trash-can size ones you get at Walmart are usually designed for occasional use and a 6 minute run-time. Some will do the job, albeit slowly. I have a Royal shredder I've had for over 10 years. Probably cost $60 new, but I've produced green trash bags full of shreddings at a time with it.
Regardless of the size and price though, if you've got massive amounts of paper it will take a long time to do and you'll have lots of trash bags stuffed with paper to throw out.
If you end up getting a shredder (of any kind), get a bottle of shredder oil and keep it lubricated.
