Panhard Mounts

I was reading the rear suspension mounting straps and saw that the conversation diverted to panhards.

I have heard that there are different benefits in mounting the panhard above or below the rear axle (both being parallel).

Can anyone explain the benefits of it being above or below the rear axle?

I believe that it would provide a firmer mount below.

Mine is *behind* the axle. Neither above or below it. I was inspired to build mine by this picture from a British parts place

The one on my V8 car is also behind...if I build one for my racer, it'll also be behind
 
The only thing you really want to be concerned with is that in normal ride height the bar is parallel to the ground. It is more convenient to have it attached to the bottom of the upright which puts it lower than the axle.
Some folks are now using a radius rod from the right side of the axle at the spring mount and going forward and to the left to the area above the transmission tunnel. This also controls lateral movement. Some of the Healey Prototypes had this type of arrangement.Works well and is less weight.
 
That's the thing that minimania sells as its panhard bar.
 
Okay, thanks for the prompt responses.

Let me clarify, sometimes they are mounted to the top point of the axle and other time the lower part. On my 1/4 eliptical it is mounted to the lower point (right where the back of the spring mounts), I have also seen them mounted to the top of this rear end bracket, where the check strap is, any ideas on if there would be a difference?

I cannot see any real serious reason either way as long as there is no clearance concerns.(maybe a very slight weight increase to the roll center of the car, not really worth concern) On compression there is some minor jacking concerns with a panhard bar. You might have heard this referenced in the NASCAR circles as track bar adjustment. this is where the pivot point of the bar on the car is raised or lowered to apply small weight changes to a rear wheel.
