painting assemblies and hardware

first, i have enjoyed reading the postings lately and this site has kept me inspired to finish my spite. i do have a question though on painting the hardware. i know that its an easy answer for parts that have been already assembled, but how do you deal with painting bolts and hardware and then installing them without damaging the paint. do you repaint and what about tight areas where you can't necessarily get spray paint to? i can't powder coat everything and commercial paint will not withstand a wrench. thanks fred

Hmm, use bright shinny bolts here. Stainless where I can and hardened where necessary.

and: paint the fasteners (stick 'em in pieces of cardboard) in lots, when you wind 'em home and inevitably scar the paint, go back with a #0 sable paintbrush and the SAME paint in a container like a 35mm film can and retouch the bare places. T'ain't hard work, just BORING. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Lots of stainless here too, Jack. Even the screws wot hold the inside door panels on: "NutZerts" and #6 machine screws. The NEXT owner will be pleased /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

...likely SWMBO's *next* husband. mehheh.

yeah ... i figured it was that straight forward .. thanks for the feedback, now on to the job at hand. thanks

How about a pic or so of your project?

i should have a couple of pics soon. the tub is headed for a shop in reading pa. i have to have floors and sills replaced along with the rear end panel. my painting question specifically dealt with the front suspension. i will be painting the various parts but wasn't real sure how to handle final painting of all the hardware once it was all together. i'm not a fan of simple spray paint since i don't believe it's strong enough to hold up to driving conditions. anyway, i will see about pics .. thanks again

I have used Rustolum for years on cars underbodys and such. It is tough, clean to bare metal use rustolum primer and then Black, several coats. Lasts for years and years.

well i can't argue with experience .. guess i will give rustoleum a try! thanks
.
ps this is a great forum!

That shop in Reading ... Carriage Craft? If so, Bill Shields is a good guy, and if you've never used him before, I highly recommend him. Racer, too, so he's very knowledgeable, as are his mechanics. There's always something neat in his shop.

well his next project is mine .. i actually have this forum to thank for finding him .. so thank you! i will be taking the tub over next week. from what i've seen of his work, my tub is in great hands ... more to follow (including pics).

You found him here? I'm curious how ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Incidentally, he did the metal work on my BMW, which is now at the paint shop (recommended by him). They say they've got the car painted, so we'll see how it came out. I was very happy with the work they'd done when it was still in primer.

there was a discussion about 2 months ago in this forum that mentioned his name and location. the location (reading pa) caught my eye and i visited him soon after.
