Painted Chrome

I'm am inching closer to getting my BE put back together (Thanks to Jack Laird for helping me with my license plate lamp!). Yesterday I got my windshield glass installed (cost $100).

Today's question deals with paint on chrome. The previous owner got green paint on two chrome pieces: The door knob and the front bumper (painted entirely green).

Can this paint be removed with a paint stripper without damaging the chrome? If no, does anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks,
Mike Pennell

Carb cleaner or break cleaner usually does the trick.

You can also try careful use of a single edge razor blade (tedious, for sure!).

And for clean-up, you could try using a Scotch-Brite pad with some "Barkeepers Friend" (sort of like Ajax but will not scratch chrome if you use with enough water).

I have used aerosol paint stripper on chrome and anodized parts to get the paint off. The finishing that I found for my grill opening was from a car that must have suffered a very poor repaint- the finishing was covered in blue paint.

I actually wanted to strip the chrome (anodizing) off of the aluminum as it was pitted. The paint remover had no effect on it.

I use xylene. I use to use it on tar spots on paint because I found its slower evaporative rate was favorable. You can work quickly t o remove stubborn gunks but I always applied wax thereafter.

(Razor blades SCRATCH chrome!!!!)

Just think how well that chrome has been protected under that paint.

Barkeepers Friend did a good job of taking the overspray off of my chromework when I was cleaning it up. Also cleaned up the metalwork a treat. Got some before/after pics on here somewhere, email me of you want them sent to you.
