paint?

Hi John, How much of the car are you going to paint? Just the outside, plus door jams, plus under hood and under trunk, color change? The last TR-4A that I had painted took 5 quarts as I changed the color, did not include primer, thinner, gun wash or other items. Bill C. Mesa, Az.

It depends too on what kind of paint you use. The less expensive paints tend to have less solids and don't cover as well. I used PPG Omni Urethane because they couldn't mix my color in Concept. I needed nearly 3 gallons for everything inside and out. I would not recommend Omni as it took 3 coats before it covered the primer. It takes a very good shine, but oxidizes quickly when exposed to the elements.

It also depends on whether you have an HVLP gun. It's been quite a while, but it seems it took me at least two gallons to paint my Spitfire, but that was everything, inside, outside and underside and the chassis. I also painted pieces and parts at a time, so I had more waste each time than if I had been doing it all at once.

Close to my estimate too. I'd budget 3 quarts per coat for the outside. It's a pain to run out. Tom
