Paint X-section

I'm in the process of stripping Crypty's trunk interior
down to bare metal. Can someone help me out with the cross
section I'm finding?

1. Bare steel covered with a darkish red paint layer.
2. Red paint covered with a thick whitish material.
3. White layer covered with sticky black tar-like layer
4. Thick tar covered with brittle new red paint layer.

Is the darkish red over bare steel maybe the original paint?

The white layer might be a primer of some sort but...

the black tar-like material escapes my painting knowledge?

Is this black material common to TRs or something PDO Pedro
came up with. It's a real bugger to get off.

thanks, /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

The darkish red on the metal is the original primer. The tar-like layer is the original insulation. No need to remove it unless you already started. Fairly easily removed with a hammer and chisel, comes off in big chunks. The whitish - I have no idea. The cheesy red belongs to Pedro. An easy fix for your trunk is to go to an automotive store and buy the bed liner kit that rolls on. You aren't worried about concours at this point.

Dale, The darkish red would be Red Oxide factory primer.Over that the seams would have been covered with a 1" wide layer of tar like seam sealer, only on the seams, not the whole surface of the trunk. Then the final 'red color'. Not sure what the white is or why the whole surface was covered with the black tar. It looks like from the overspray on the felt pieces, your trunk has been resprayed.

Thanks Bill but what is a bed liner kit?

Yes Joe, the trunk has been resprayed, no doubt
about it. Very thin, brittle paint.

I'm maybe 30% stripped including cleaning out all
the seams. Should I put the tar layer back in?
I have access to very thin, 120 mil ,self adhesive
asphalt sheets.

thanks,

No! If you are gonna take it out, don't try to replace it with anything but the original stuff, which is available from TRF, but still not worth it. If indeed there is seam sealer, and you scrape it all out, go get some fresh from an automotive store (brushable from Eastwood works great) and reapply it. Herculiner from Autozone works well, similar stuff to RhinoLiner, just mix and roll in. Tough as nails, won't come off, don't need to apply primer paint, goes onto bare metal, or even over old primer.
