paint refurb progress

Here's TeeYah after a week of paint rubbing.

Paint was a single-coat done several years ago. Had orange peel, sags, dust specks, etc.

I wet-sanded with 1500, then 2000. Then hand-work with 3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound, then 3M Perfect-it II Rubbing Compound, then 3M Foam Rubbing Pad Glaze. Ended with Meguiar's Tech Wax (applied by hand, buffed with 6" dual action wheel, wool pad).

Not perfect, but better than before.

looks good.next time dont use the rubbing compound after 1500/2000,thats going backwards. your car looks good,makes ya feel good,..dont it
 
Tom just so I understand this. You sand by hand,do you use back and forth motion or circular. You know."wax on wax off" or "Sand a Floor"

Wyatt - absolutely. Definitely makes me feel good to see some progress there.

DNK - on all the wet sanding, I soaked the paper in water with a squirt of dish detergent, then sanded back and forth.

Paul - thanks for the compliment. You're the BCF guy who saw my car when it first arrived. It'll never have the panache of your beautiful 6, but it's something I'm getting kinda attached to.

Don't sell yourself or your sweet little car short. That car is beautiful and you have done a great job with it, from where you started.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, my friend and I think that yours looks just as good as anyones.
 
Is that really your car or a picture shamelessly stolen from the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance archive?

I have not had to wetsand at all but I have used rubbing and polishing compounds. I feel more in control with the hand rubbing compounds. Is that why you used it after the 2000 wetsand?

Pebble Beach? Yeah yeah - now there's a pickup line if I ever heard one. LOL

It took a *lot* of courage to attack that paint with sandpaper. Whether with a sanding block or just fingertips, it sure looks scary to see the sheen disappear. The rubbing compounds are so much easier to "control", and to me at least seem much less likely to cause irreparable damage. Believe me, it was a learning process. Now that I think of it, I only used the 05954 on one panel, as an experiment after the 2000 paper; didn't need it for the rest of the car.

DNK - I did the wet sanding panel by panel, then the compounds panel by panel. Right front fender (wing) was my test-bed to try to figure out what the heck I was doing. After that it was pretty much right door, RR wing, tonneau, boot cover, LR wing, left door, LF wing, bonnet, etc. for sanding, then repeat the circle with compounding. Same thing for the final waxing.
