paint problem/

I spent 2 1/2 months getting the bodywork on my 79 midget straight and it only took 2 days to destroy it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Here's what I did:
1) applied sealer (martin senour cs279)
2) 4 coats of basecoat(56c 5 to 15 minutes flash time between coats)
3) 14 hours later applied 2 coats of clear coat( clear 15405/15438 hardner
4) ran out of sealer so I went to napa and got more.
5) 1 1/2 hours later applied 3rd coat of sealer and the surface started to act like I put paint stripper on it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
The wrinkled paint is random all over the car so I can't understand what happened. After the second coat a little orange peel was evident but no signs of a reaction showing.
Any ideas on what happened and how to fix this? I've wet sanded the drivers door and it appears the wrinkling took place in the basecoat and didnt touch the primer or sealer underneath.

base coat and clear coat incompatible? enamel vs poly?

I'm no paint guy, just shots in the dark.

Sorry for your misfortune. After putting in all that prep work this has to be really dishartening!

I dont think so because the 2 coats of clear were fine but the when the 3rd was put on the problem started.
And yes it was disheartning.Very.

Did you thin the clearcoat with anything? Every paint system is different, but did you deviate from the directions at all? If not call the manufacturer help line.

No, I just added the hardner to the clear coat as the directions said to.I haven't called the manufacture yet, it couldnt hurt. Thanks

called the manufacture and they said only need 2 coats of clear and....no longer than 20 minutes between clear coats. they said that the previous coat will start curing and if you apply a fresh coat, they will react with each other. guess the lesson is get info from manufacture or do the homework yourself.
thanks for all the advice and i hope my lesson learned will save someone else this headache.

[/ QUOTE ] Wow, I need to check that out. I just bought some paint and clearcoat last night online and need all the info I can get. So, if you wait over 20 min then you can't put any more clear on? So if you wan to fix a door ding you have to paint the whole car again?

Well I'm not sure this applies to the wrinkling, but I've shot about 3 or 4 cars with base/clear, and have always been told if you wait for the base to completely dry, you have to 1200 sand the entire surface to prep for the clear coat, that clear should be applied to base 15-20 minutes after the last base coat. The rule of thumb is paint has to either still be tacky or fine sanded to have a etch to adhere. I did a couple of two color scheme on race cars where I was not able to shhot the clear right after the last coat of base because of the two color paint scheme, in those cases I always 1200 wet sanded the entire surface and ten clear coated and got great results. You mention a sealer in addition to the base and clear, I've never used a sealer, tell us more about the sealer you mentioned, you said you put it on before the first base coat and after the final clear coat, I'm not all familar with the sealer.

Sorry I'm so late to respond but you can put another layer of clear on but only after the existing clear has cured. My problem was that the clear I already put on was curing when I added another coat of clear.
Bottom line is if you got any doubt, call the manufacturer and get the info straight from their mouths.

Hap, if you do not care to comment here please send me a PM.

I note your adv. for Rebuild/race prep SU carbs, I have a couple for my Bugeye that need to be polished etc., etc. and rebuilt. This is what you are talking about?
Is there a fixed priceing on this job and if so what is it?
