Paint for Brake drums

I think I saw this posted somewhere already but I'm a lazy so and so and cant find it so I'm asking again.

Is there anything you can paint/coat brake drums with that will last and survive the heat.

You could try a high heat paint, but remember that will also be insulating heat inside the drums, rather than radiating it out.

I just used rattlecan "casting" colored paint - has held up fine. Why not just use brake caliper paint? surely the same conditions would apply.

Well, yes and no.

The calipers will retain more heat, but in a smaller surface area. With disk brakes, the parts that generate heat, the rotors and pads (upon release of pedal pressure) are exposed and that allows the rotors/pads to cool in open air. Once the rear brakes are applied and the drum and shoes get hot, the outer drums are the only area exposed to the air to cool down. That is why a lot of rear drums have fins, to aid in the cooling.

Many have done it and had no problems. My front calipers are painted red, but my rear aluminum drums are not, for the reasons stated above. JMHO.

My rear drums have fins on them but the drums are still only the same material as the stock ones. Fins/drums intergral single machined piece.

I've used high heat engine paint on the rear drums, in a gun metal silver and after, coated them with high heat engine clear. Have held up on the B for 5 years and no peeling. PJ

After reading my post I got to thinking that for normal driving it might be a bit of overkill to say that they shouldn't be painted. As I said, many have done it with no problems, but I chose not to. To each their own on this one.

POR 15 makes a brake paint.

Very few stockists of the POR range near where I am. Only found one place so far, have not checked out their stock yet.
How about 2 packs would they survive the heat?

Or maybe,, that ceramic coating you can get done on exhaust manifolds.

I think that Eastwood also makes a product for the drums.

Mychael I feel like you are way overthinking this. Any high heat paint will do. I don't think I or anyone else has really had a problem with paint peeling.

I have used regular rust oleum paint on a number of brake drums over the years the first time I did it I thought it would burn off or peel, I have never had any problems at all.
