TR2/3/3A Paint Code for Silver TR-3 Wire Wheels

The Dockers code is available from several sources (CD 31568 I think). The same paint is listed by several names "silver Laquer" and "aluminum wheel paint" among them. I don't think there is much if any difference in the hue and the paint as used on steel disk wheels and painted wire wheels on later cars. Moss and TRF have the silver paint in their catalogs but it was in spray cans (at least it was the last time I looked. I don't like the cans and I didn't have much luck crossing the dockers numbers so I matched by sight. Came up with Centari, code 12 General Motors (sorry) Silver Effect. Looks good to me. Tom

When I worked in an LBC shop years ago the 1974 Ford Granada Silver was considered the silver of choice for all British wire wheels. We got this from some concours judges. Comes real close!!!

Tom & Larry Thank you. Tom are you saying that I can't just provide my paint guy with the Dockers Code that you provided but must use Centari, Code 12 General Motors Silver Effect?

I'm saying that my paint guy looked at me like I had two heads when I presented him with it. Cross references probably exist somewhere but my guy certainly didn't have (use) them. I think the old DuPont number is available also but again, my guy couldn't use it.
There are some trade cross references on line but you need a commercial account to view them. Since I never had one, I've never seen them.
Mine came from polishing up the inside of an original steel wheel, scanning it then fine tuning the match with available chips. Of course, there is no guarantee that the inside of a 50 year old wheel is an accurate hue, but as I said, it looks good o me. Had I Larry's info above, I probably would have used the Ford paint or at least compared it to mu wheel. Also consider what type of coating you want. You have what seems a pretty good list above but lots more than color differences among them. Tom

Howdy Art,

My personal exp. has been with the "Moss" paints whether it be "Silver Wheel" or "Engine".

I`ve used their spraybomb on "Disc & Wires" on many cars & was extremely pleased with the results.

Of course; Strip the Wheel to bare. Prime & apply thin coats for best results.

Their Wheel paint comes out like a "Satin Silver" color (Not too Silvery or Grayish). Its a Lacquer type of finish with a clear coat in it. Its not cheap but It is "GOOD"!

Russ

PS: "1" can typ. will finish "5" wheels.

I just painted my four TR3 steel wheels with VHT high temp polyurethane wheel paint spray cans.
I ordered Ford Argent Silver, based on recommendations on this forum from my FAPS and had it in two days.It is #SP188,was about $16 for 2 cans, and the results were very nice. The color looks right,to me anyway.
One can did four wheels, with left over for touch up.
Tom

I've used Ford code M5299A with good results and have also been told that Centari B8416A and Martin Senour 90T2454 are good ones.
