HB 1203 was signed by Governor Corbett yesterday 12 Apr 12 and should be implemented by PennDOT within the next 120 days.

HB 1203 will allow antique car owners in PA to use Year of Manufacture (YOM) license plates when registering their car as an option in lieu of the current Historic Antique plate. Plates from 1906 - 1975 will be allowed. YOM plates will require a one time registration fee, cars will not need inspected, but they will be limited use plates like the current Historic Antique registration.

If you don't like the limited use clause don't bitch, you can alway pay annual registration fees, get annual inspections, and then you will have unlimited use of the car. No sympathy from me.

It will be the vehicle owners responsibility to obtain the YOM plates for the car prior to registration and I believe the way the bill is written the state has final say on allowing a plate. Not sure what that means, but it could be things like the plate(s) must be in a reasonable condition and possibly the plate cannot duplicate a currently registered number.

Hummmm.... I have that butt ugly PA antique plate right now and hate it. Wonder if they will exchange it?
Sorry to ask this dumb question, but what exactly is a YOM plate? Tell me more....

Elliot - I agree. Pennsylvania went from one of the nicest (it's a plain but distinctive purple saying "PA antique historic car" to one with a quite ugly 1910-1920 era unknown car and sorry colors. I've seen a good number of collector cars at shows with that ugly car covered by any number of more fitting (for the vehicle) decals.

Glad I'm not the only one Jay.
For those who haven't seen our ugly antique plate, here it is.
Don't look too long or you'll

YOM = Year of manufacture. If I could, I would be sporting these on the Vauxhall. Sadly they strongly encourage you to wait till the car is nearly on the road.

I hope NJ follows.

Utah does these as well, though they just work as regular issue plates (so need annual renewal/inspections). Found a set though Craigslist when I bought my MGB, and I quite like them.

Something nice about a simple number plate, no pictures or slogans or whatnot. Just black with white letters.

NY has that too, in the same "limited" rules as PA. I'd love to have YOM plates on my classics but can't abide with their restrictions, so it's regular plates for my cars. NY still requires the yearly inspection with antique/YOM plates, and I'm quite sure there are still regular registration fees. (Correct me if I'm wrong, cause I might be)

In Virginia we had white on black for even years and black on white for odd years for alot of the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

The nicest of all PA plates, IMO, is the old "Classic Car" plate. It's the antique plate in reverse, white plate with purple lettering:

I really hate the "Jalopy Plate" too. It's butt ugly.

:iagree: The current "Jalopy Plate" could make an onion cry :cryin:

New York allows the YOM plate to be used. NY calls them Vintage plates. Of course, it has to be different then any currently used numbers. You have to submit the number to them and they will tell you if it's OK. We also have what they call historical plates. There's no driving restrictions (unless the insurance company has them), but the car must have a yearly safety inspection, and yearly registration fees. The only restriction on the vintage plates is that it not be used for daily transportation. The plates are pretty nondescript. At the bottom, it says "historical", and the number always starts or ends with "HX". ("HM" for motorcycles).

Oh that is horrible! We have somthing similar but not as bad. Same car's shilloette but smaller and b&w.

Too bad I can't get a personalized antique plate or I'd have one that said "Mullit" on it for ther Javelin.
