Went for a long drive yesterday up the Angeles Crest Hwy (CA#2), and the car ran great, even at over 5,000 feet of elevation. Anyway, on my return trip home, back in L.A. the OD started to act up. Driving at a steady speed on the freeway with the OD engaged it began to suddenly disengage and the RPM would kick up accordingly. It was it and miss, sometimes it would stay engaged and other times it would kick down.

Thoughts?

It's either electrical (bad connections, or solenoid going bad) or lever actuator adjustment, or OD oil pressure fluctuation. When I had these symptoms, I worked on all three areas and fixed it but I don't know which one did the trick. The easiest is to start with electrical. Do an advanced search and you'll find many threads on OD. Check my posts too.

Jeff-Check your fluid level first. Second run the car with the overdrive engaged and If the unit disengages try pushing the shift lever over toward the passenger side. If the unit engages then the problem is the shift lever switch. I have seen this problem on my car and I have just removed the washer below the switch and reinstall to remedy the problem.

I see you are in Altedena, local Healey owners meet at the UA in La Canada on Saturday mornings, starts at 7:00 AM. Peter

howdy,
i've had similar experience more than once, source of problem was a failing detent in trans switch [3rd-4th gear switch] to test @rest. ign on,OD switch on shift lever in 3rd or HI move the shift lever towords & away from trans center. if it intermittently activates the solinoid [you can hear it] you've found the bad switch [less than $20] i've worn out 2 of them c/o moss mtrs
