Overdrive Retards Vehiclear Speed

Yes. Paradoxical. Driving down road. Suddenly tires chirp and overdrive cuts out. Subsequent attempts to cycle overdrive switch results in eratic RPMS and noticeabe slowing of vehicLe as if it is incurring extra drag. What do you all think?

First place I'd check is the gearbox switch (a sort of passing gear, when worn just the right amount, was to pull the lever to the left & rearward__while still fully engaging 4th gear__to kick out the overdrive; release the lever and the overdrive re-engages).

Next on the list are the connections__ALL OF THEM__and then individual devices, like the relay, throttle switch (if still used) and the solenoid itself. At least you don't still have the governor of the 3-sp box.
