Overdrive off indicator flashing?

OK I’m totally confused & have never seen this problem before and would like some advice. The vehicle in question is my wife’s 95 Explorer that we purchased new in 1995. Anyway the issue is the O/D off indicator flashing. Pressing the O/D on & off switch on the shifter has no affect whatsoever. And of course making matters worst is that neither the owner’s handbook, nor the Ford Explorer Haynes manual give any hints other than to take the handbook saying to take the vehicle in for servicing.

I looked at the fluid level and it seems fine however the fluid has a slight reddish brown hue to it & looks like it could be changed. But taking it out on a short road test the transmission seems to shift & function just fine.

Anybody ever seen this type of problem before and/or got any ideas as to what it might be? Would a servicing take care of the problem or do I need a specialist?

Not trying to be cheap - but I’d really prefer NOT taking it to the dealer for service and would like to know what my options are.

Hi Brett,
I looked through a couple of Ford forums. The general feeling is that It needs to go to a dealer or good transmission shop as the problem "could" be serious if let go.

Following some of the suggestions on other site’s treads – I tried to reset the flashing O/D off error by disconnecting the battery. This cleared the flashing and hasn’t returned after a long drive.

I will take the truck to a local shop that is open tomorrow for a check-up and servicing. If they can’t find anything wrong I’ll just have to assume that it’s Ford’s polite little way of telling me it’s time for a servicing and leave it at that. But tomorrow we should know more.

Not too worried about it - as my wife & I started shopping for a replacement earlier this month. I suspect we’ll be selling the old gal in the next four or five months anyway.
