My 65 bj8 has developed a low growel in the O.D..no noise comes from the transmission but when i engage the O.D. it starts? switch it off and it stops,? i drained the oil and found no shavings, its clean. Except for the noise the O.D.work's as it should, theirs 90,000 miles on the car and their has never been any past repair's on the unite's, im guessing O.D. bearing, but im looking for some kind of external adjustments to check before i take it out.any thoughts would be apprecated, thanks,Mikkus

Hello mikkus,

The only external adjustment is for the solenoid itself but if as you say the O/D is working then there is no need to mess with it. There is nothing else from the outside.

The bearings in these units usually last a long time providing regular oil changes are adhered to. If you are going to take the transmission out of the car to see what the noise is then it would be better to replace the bearings and thrust washers while you are at it.

No point in having to go back in to do it again 2 weeks after the first time.

About the only part that gives any trouble are the needle roller bearings that support the planetary gears. If these wear the shaft they run on you can get noise. The shaft and needle roller bearings should both be replaced. If your going into it this far, just do it.

Are you going to do it yourself?. if so it's not that difficult so don't be talked into taking it into a shop that you don't trust. If you have the "Haynes" workshop manual it gives a good description of how to go about it. Yes the factory manual is also good but for me the "Haynes" is sacrificial. Meaning, if it get's dirty it's no big deal.

Best regards,

bundyrum.

Thanks Bundy, you bet if i take it out a lot of things will get done, i have a workshop manul with lots of dirt, ill check out Haynes, ive used them on other cars.i really dont like the noise, this is my baby and if its crying i got to fix it and i could be messing something else up by letting it go, i wish i knew of a straight up transmission shop in the S.F.bay area,i may take it to the British car Specialist, minus the tunnel, im getting to old for the removel part, thanks for your input, Mikkus.

Hello mikkus,

What part of the S.F.bay area are you in?

I'm in San Rafael.

Best regards,

Hi Bundy, im in Woodside above Redwood City, drove the Healey today and i believe their is noise when its not in O.D.too, but i think it gets drownd out by the higer rev's and the glass packs, i think the tunnels coming off next so i may hear things better. some forum member said he could take his off in 45 min, im getting good at removing mine to, ill try to beat that, Ha, take care ,Mikkus.

Mikkus,
I dare, double dare you to beat my record. Did i day 45 minutes? I think I've shaved some time off that the last time.

If you don't want to make the drive to Stockton, my Healey mechanic is here in San Leandro. He's been working on British cars for over 40 years. Good to know who the British mechanics are in our part of NorCal.

Roger, aka some forum member, Ha!
Best of luck Mikkus
