TR5/TR250 overdrive learning curve

I had one of our local Vintage Transmission Expert rebuild the trans and overdrive on the 250. He is not schooled on triumph transmissions but said he has done many transmissions and they are all similar.
He did a great job on the rebuild. The transmission works smooth. But the O/D was not working as good as it should. I tried different adjustments et. to no avail. So I broke down and called a local British car mech. He asked what oil I used, "What the book say's 80-90 gear oil" Wrong he uses 20-50 motor oil. So we flushed out the trans and O/D with ATF. With a small adjustment to the solenoid the O/D works perfect. I just drained and refilled the trans with 20-50 Valvoline and heading for a drive thru the delta. I have to drive it for at least for 30 miles to make sure all is good. At least that is the reason I told my Wife.
Will let you all know how the drive goes.

I believe Don Elliott is also a big believer in 20/50 for the gearbox.

Cheers

Several different opinions on this and even STC changed through the years. But...

Hard for me to imagine that an OD that would not work with 80/90 gear oil would work with 20w50 motor oil.

I am glad it worked out well for you, just don't see why that change would make much difference.

BTW - The rebuilder of my OD recommended non-detergent 30w. Did that for some years but now I am using Redline MT90.
