Overdrive hungry for oil

Wow, six months (and 3,000 miles) and I lost nearly a quart of oil from my overdrive gearbox.

It stopped working yesterday so I checked the oil level (went through the electrics previously and they were fine). I was amazed that twenty-some ounces leaked out. I topped off the 'box but it still wasn't working. It turns out that the level was so low that the oil pump must have been pumping air! (I hope my gearbox forgives me someday.)

After plenty of sloshing around today the o/d is primed and back on track! :yesnod: (but not after plenty of fretting about the high prices of o/d parts!)

Are you sure it was full the first time around? I think to completely fill them you have to top them up, drive a bit, then top it up again.

Perhaps you know that already, I which case I'd be looking for a puddle under the car.

Not to be meddlesome but you may need to pull it out and freshen it up before you BLOW IT UP!!!!!!These are rare enough without killing one with neglect....

Geo, I can't say for sure if I bothered to top it off after a drain and refill so you're probably right.

MadDog, I'd like to go out and buy a nice rebuilt one for $2,800 and slowly go through mine. I'm just hoping I can get a couple more years out of it (if I can) :nopity:

There are some o rings that dry up and go away in behind the solenoid. That's where mine leaks. Very inexpensive, but to replace them means a tear down. If that is your problem, you should be fine as long as you keep it topped up.

Just to add - the oil you are using makes a big difference to how long it stays in, if you have any kind of leak. For instance, Synthetic Redline MT90 is a lot runnier than gear oil or 20/50 nondetergent motoroil. (If you can get by with topping it off twice a year, you can look at it as just regular maintenance....)
