Ok here goes, at work the other day I have a guy bring me an 80 MGB with OD. His problem is that when he is backing up the car makes a ticking that you can feel and hear, similar to a bad U joint or a rear end going out. Both of those checked out ok, and the trans had plenty of fluid. The car only does this when it is backing up when you put it in first and go nothing strange happens and the OD works flawlessly. I have a couple ideas about it but would like some outside imput on the problem as well.

Not always, but if it engages and disengages properly in forward gears then that shouldn't be the problem. Are you sure it isn't the u-joints? They could make noise in only one direction. It could be in the spokes, assuming this is a wire whel car. Also check the brakes. Dunno, I'm guessing here.

Will putting it on a lift rule out WW if it is a WW or do you nned to have it under load?

Axles?

Well its not U joints thats the first thing that we checked. It is a wire wheel car, but why would they only click going one way? It only does it under load. I doubt it could be the axles, as we swapped rear ends for one we know to be good. After we changed out the rear end, it got better, but it didn't go away. Initially it would start doing it right off, but now with the new rear end in it, you have to drive about 50 or 60 feet for it to start doing clicking.

My '85 XJ6 just did that exact same thing...clicking in forward but not reverse under load...nothing with rear end in air & car in gear - on the passenger rear side only - turned out to be a bad bearing out at the hub!

It turned out to be a bad soleniod. hanks for the ideas guys.
