ok Im tiring to tune my 73s Carboartors.
I am hampered by the fact that I have a masters in computers!
one carb is fluttering up and down when I crank it the other when I step on the gas and crank it. it is not starting by the way.
the rear plugs are not getting sooty the front are.
so Im staring at this and just feeling stupid!
Help!!!

SUs are easy once you see how to do it.

See if you can find an expert close by that will walk you through it.
 
I am just going to throw out a few guesses for the heck of it.

You may have a few issues colliding. Firstly, the no start thing sounds ignition related. Most cars will at least try to start and idle with carbs in the worst possible condition. So start by inspecting your ignition system. The difference in piston flutter could be a vacuum leak or a stuck valve. Vacuum leaks can be pretty hard to find on a non-running engine. Look for a loose manifold or carb mounting nut. I am not very familiar with your car, but a busted hose may also be the culprit. A stuck valve may be immediately apparent upon removal of the valve cover. But it also may take a little detective work. I would start by having someone turn the car over while you watch the valve train for inconsistencies. If you have sooty plugs, it could also be carbon build up causing the valves to leak. I have heard that Sea Foam does a good job of taking care of that problem.
 
Oh yeah, carbs don't work very well without fuel. Check to make sure your float bowls are filling up.

the floats are fine I checked that. Ill put my head under the hood when I get home.
I had it running last summer but the ignition was a nightmear
I put in a 1967 dash and swapped the tack to negative earth.

it fires up when I spray quick start down the Carborators

no last summer it would but it had no "umphf"

Im not even getting that now I think I might have fiddled with things and made it worse.

my optimism gets me in to trouble

If you have the money, it may be worth sending the carbs off to Hap Waldrop or Joe Curto to be rebuilt. If the condition of your ignition system is unkown, I would just replace all the "perishables": plugs, wires, points, cap, rotor, condensor, and coil.

I have done the Plugs wires points Cap rotor and coil

Im moving over seas and dont have time to send them away

Are the ign wires to the right plugs?

Is there fire at the plugs? Check.
 
I thought you were about to take a swim. Maybe Donn can help you sort out your carbs. You should only be a ferry ride away.
