Outlook Express 7.0 Question

Have any of you ever had OE7 dump all your email? Yesterday I had all knids of email in my mailbox...today I've got nothing for the last 2 week but all my mail before that....its like 2 weeks just disappeared. Think I'm gonna delete my account from OE7 & just read email directly off my server - but it I do that, how will I be able to look at the mail cached in OE7?

Weird, eh?

Never seen that problem unless it was a problem between the email client and a web-based account, such as Hotmail. Synchronization can get screwed up between those sometimes.

I can't remember if Outlook Express has Auto Archive or if that's limited to Outlook, but it sure does sound like you've got Auto Archive turned on.

If OE is getting to tricksy for you, you might give Thunderbird a try. I've been using it for about 3 years, and I've had no problems with it:

I drink espresso by the gallon. That's why I'm slightly faster in posting today than you are:devilgrin:

Gotten Firefox 3, yet? I like it!

Yup - I've had it for awhile. Unfortunately it suffers from the same ailment all new FF/TB releases suffer from: lack of support for the older plugins and themes. Hopefully those folks will update their add-ons quickly!

Well, I closed my POP3 account on OE7...now I'm using the web mail that's part of my web site server (& I removed all the filters so everything beyond what the server considers Spam will get through to me....I hope!)

Tony - usually all you have to do is change the OE7 "View" option to "show all mail". One of the bugs (oops - I mean "undocumented features") is that OE7 magically sets itself over to only "show mail over xxx days old", or something similar.

Tom

Well, it was showing all mail back to first of the year except for the last 2 weeks disappeared.

<span style="color: #CC0000">Scott, I've had emails wiped out.

In general I agree with you as I also use Thunderbird
in all my computers. I use computers dedicated to specific use.
Like this one I'm on now, for messing around stuff .

I keep all my business email and such in another computer.
A great record of events with clients.
Rarely is it connected to the web.

BUT.............

One time, Thunderbird updated itself and wiped out 2 1/2 years
of saved emails plus my entire client email address book.
Blink of an eye---all gone

After THAT I routinely cut/past my addresses and email them
to one of my other computers.

That's actually a pretty simple thing to get out of - and, unfortunately, it does happen from time to time. Your email and contacts weren't wiped out at all. They're stored away in a directory other than where "thunderbird" is installed. Usually some place like "C:\Documents and Settings\[login-name]\Application Data\Thunderbird"

Sometimes a configuration file in the Thunderbird profile can be corrupted (it's rare, but it happens), but the data still exists. Mozilla has a few notes on their site about how to get the data back.

The beauty of Thunderbird is that you can back up everything in your "profile" and restore it on another computer with relative ease.

As a matter of habit I back up all my Thunderbird data (not the program) once every week if possible. I use an external 250gb USB drive and have Microsoft's Synctoy to do a quick backup. I can plug the drive into any Windows PC and restore it all in a few minutes.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it's a lot better than losing years worth of business email from four different accounts!

...and you can use Lightning, the calendar/organizer add on for Thunderbird to maintain your busy schedule(just like in the MS Office version of Outlook)

I've got Outlook ( The pricey one), but I haven't used it in years. Thunderbird is quick, easy to use, and unlike Outlook, it's never locked up on me when I've changed views or attempted to sort messages by a different field.

Am I the only person on the planet who has used OE for ten years with no problem whatsoever? I own Outlook and I've tried Thunderbird but prefer OE overall. No lockups, no lost messages, nothing!

I just use the online server. We use OE at work for line locate notifications, but we don't have problems with it.
