OT - Terrifying XKE on Ebay

Dear oh dear... As soon as I saw the first of the interior pix a ~smell~ came to my brain. "Old English Car Interior" came back in a FLOOD of sensory overload! That poor thing is gonna take a LOT of dedication to pull it back from the precipice. YEARS as a "private project" car.

It appears to be all there though, and it seems the condition is not misrepresented. But it'll take bushel baskets full of C-notes to make it well again.

<sigh>

You could almost see a path to just driving the darn thing for a couple of years since it it going to need to be totally stripped. Dip/soak the whole care in a huge vat of rust converter and get some miles in.....

Nah.

Seen better... driven worse.

Hi Geo - you know, I think that is a good point. I mean, sure, we all know there is a ton of work there waiting to be addressed. Sure, cubic dollars are going to be required. But you know what, I bet you could get her running and have a ton of fun before you addressed any of that. And isn't that really the idea?

Had an XKE, great cars, but like most LBC's exposed rot indicates major issues. The trunk area put me off most...there are stress points on the front frame/suspension prone to rot that can lead to real driving problems you can't deal with unless repaired and that level of rot where a frame doesn't exist ain't a driver for long.

The front subframe can rot too, and if it does car is probably not safe to drive, I drove a very rusty MGB GT in college, but that Jag may not be fit to drive. But I do agree there many cars out there that may be "a lot of work and money" to make right, but you can still have a lot of fun driving them around for a few years.

Once knew a guy who raced an old Alfa Giulietta... He welded both doors shut. That way the tech guys couldn't inadvertently open both at the same time, necessitating use of a floorjack & 2x4 amidships to get 'em both closed again. :shocked:

"Flexible Flyer"!!! :jester:
